Is Rhode Island Worth Visiting In 2024? Absolutely & Here’s Why!
Rhode Island is a tiny piece of the United States and part of the collection of New England states. Many people don’t even know it exists or think it’s a part of New York.
Rhode Island has its own identity and is an amazing place to visit to experience history, the arts, gorgeous scenery, and an amazingly diverse food scene.

Is Rhode Island Worth Visiting In 2024?
I may be a bit biased since I am Rhode Island born and bred. But I will do my best to share with you why I believe Rhode Island is worth visiting in 2024.
First, a little history to set the backdrop.
What makes Rhode Island so special?
Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, was considered a bit of a rebel. The Massachusetts Puritans threw Roger Williams out of their group when they didn’t all agree. There is probably a lot more to the story, but this is how Rhode Island was established. Roger Williams created a place where people could be freer than in the Puritan-run colony to the north. Taking cues from the lessons he learned from the strict Puritans, Rhode Island offered sanctuary to people of all religions.
The wide variety of people and talents allowed Rhode Island to grow. The natural resources of water access along 2 sides of the area helped the colony prosper. Even though Rhode Island is tiny compared to other states, its early beginnings created an attitude that allowed the state to remain independent. There’s a sense of pride native Rhode Islanders carry with them. You will feel it when you come to visit.
Is there anything to do in Rhode Island?
There are plenty of things to do in Rhode Island. Let me share a list of activities waiting for you to enjoy. Of course this is not a complete list, but it’s a start.

Why should you visit Rhode Island?
Rhode Island is unique in its own way. It blends colonial architecture and Industrial Revolution history with a capital city that merges the best of everything. Just for reference, the American Industrial Revolution started in Rhode Island about 10 minutes from my home. Check out Slater Mill to learn how it all started here along the Blackstone River.
From woods and lakes to the sun and the Atlantic Ocean, Rhode Island packs a lot within its borders. And with measurements of approximately 50 miles north to south and 37 miles east to west, getting around the entire state is quick and easy.
Best Rhode Island Beaches
With water on 2 sides of the state, Rhode Island is chock full of beaches. We also have Narragansett Bay cutting deep into the state creating even more swimming areas. From small private beaches to public state beaches, there is a beach here to suit everyone.
☀️Misquamicut State Beach
Misquamicut Beach is a popular beach located in the town of Westerly, Rhode Island. It is one of the largest and most popular beaches in the state, attracting visitors from all over New England and beyond.
The beach itself is a beautiful stretch of sand that stretches for nearly two miles along the coast. The water is clear and clean, and there are usually lifeguards on duty during the summer months. There are also plenty of amenities available, including restrooms, showers, and a concession stand.
In addition to swimming and sunbathing, Misquamicut Beach is also a popular spot for surfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. There are plenty of rental shops in the area where you can rent equipment if you don’t have your own.
During the summer months, Misquamicut Beach is lively, with plenty of activities and events taking place. There are weekly concerts, fireworks displays, and even a carnival that sets up on the beach every year.
☀️Salty Brine State Beach
Salty Brine Beach is a popular beach located in the fishing village of Galilee in the town of Narragansett. The beach is named after Walter “Salty” Brine. He was a local radio and television personality who was known for his love of the ocean and his famous line of “No school Foster-Glocester” during the winter season.
The beach itself is relatively small, but it offers a variety of amenities for visitors, including restrooms, showers, and changing rooms. Get there early because the parking lot is quite small and fills up fast. There is additional parking nearby, although parking can be limited during peak season.
One of the unique features of Salty Brine Beach is its proximity to the Block Island Ferry. The ferry departs from a nearby dock, and visitors can watch it come and go while enjoying the beach. Make sure to wave at the passengers.
In addition to swimming and sunbathing, Salty Brine Beach is a popular spot for fishing. The beach is located near several popular fishing spots, and visitors can often be seen casting their lines into the water.

☀️Oakland Beach
Oakland Beach is a popular beach located in Warwick, Rhode Island. It is situated on the western shore of Narragansett Bay and offers a beautiful view of the water.
The beach has a long history, dating back to the late 1800s when it was a popular spot for vacationers from nearby cities. Over the years, the beach has undergone numerous renovations and upgrades, and today it is a modern and well-equipped destination for beachgoers.
One of the highlights of Oakland Beach is its long boardwalk, which runs along the beachfront and offers stunning views of the bay. The boardwalk is lined with restaurants, ice cream shops, and other businesses, making it a great place to grab a bite to eat or just stretch your legs.
The beach itself is relatively small but has plenty of sand for visitors to spread out and enjoy. There are also lifeguards on duty during the summer months, making it a safe place for swimming.
Other amenities at Oakland Beach include restrooms, showers, and changing rooms. There is also a playground for children and a pavilion that can be rented out for events.
Oakland Beach is a great destination for visitors to Rhode Island who are wanting to relax along Narragansett Bay. Don’t forget to try the clamcakes and chowder from Iggy’s, one of my favorites.
Must-See Rhode Island Attractions & Things To Do
For such a tiny state, Rhode Island has plenty of attractions to keep people entertained. It was hard to choose just a handful, but I believe these activities represent some of the best things you can do to experience the state.

Rhode Island is home to many different cultural groups all sharing their food creations. The world famous Johnson & Wales University trains plenty of culinary specialists, many of whom never leave the state. ✅ Roger Williams Zoo
Roger Williams Park Zoo is a popular zoological park established in 1872 and is one of the oldest in the country. It is named after Roger Williams, the founder of the city of Providence.
The zoo is home to over 150 species of animals from around the world, including elephants, giraffes, snow leopards, and red pandas. One of the main attractions is the “Fabulous Felines” exhibit, which houses several species of big cats, such as lions, tigers, and jaguars. Other popular exhibits include the “Tropical America” exhibit, which features monkeys, birds, and reptiles from Central and South America, and the “North America” exhibit, which showcases animals from the local region, including black bears, river otters, and bald eagles.
In addition to its animal exhibits, the zoo offers a range of educational programs and events for visitors of all ages. These include guided tours, behind-the-scenes experiences, and special events such as Zoo Nights and Brew at the Zoo.

✅ Day Trip out to Block Island
Taking a ferry out to Block Island is a popular activity for visitors to Rhode Island. Block Island is a beautiful and serene island that lies about 13 miles south of the mainland. It is accessible by ferry from several ports in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York.
The ferry ride itself is a scenic experience, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding coastline. Depending on the departure point, the ride can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. The ferries are typically well-equipped, with amenities like indoor and outdoor seating, restrooms, and food and beverage options.
Once you arrive on Block Island, you’ll be greeted with a charming and relaxed atmosphere, characterized by beautiful beaches, historic lighthouses, and plenty of outdoor recreational activities. The Rhode Island State House is the capitol building of the state of Rhode Island, located in the city of Providence. It is a neoclassical building that was designed by the renowned architect, McKim, Mead & White, and was completed in 1904.
The State House is home to the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, General Treasurer, and the State Legislature, which consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The building also houses the Rhode Island State Library and State Archives.
The Rhode Island State House is an impressive structure, with its white marble exterior and impressive dome, which stands at 223 feet tall and is the fourth largest self-supporting marble dome in the world. The dome is topped with a gold-covered bronze statue of the Independent Man, which is a symbol of the state’s commitment to individual liberty and freedom.
Inside the State House, visitors can find a number of impressive works of art, including murals and frescoes by some of the state’s most celebrated artists. The building is open to the public and guided tours are available for visitors who want to learn more about the State House’s history and significance.

Rhode Island, being a coastal state with a rich maritime history, has many lighthouses. Here are just a few of the favorites.

Castle Hill Lighthouse: Located in Newport, Castle Hill Lighthouse was built in 1890 and is still in operation. It is situated at the entrance to Narragansett Bay and offers beautiful views of the bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
Watch Hill Lighthouse: Located in Westerly, Watch Hill Lighthouse was first built in 1808 and has undergone several changes over the years. It is still in operation and is a popular destination for visitors to the area.

Is Newport, Rhode Island Worth Visiting?
Newport is the connection many people make when thinking about Rhode Island. The sea-faring history surrounding the city is evident and the colonial buildings still line Thames Street. The waterfront area is stocked full of shops and restaurants to keep you busy.

Is Providence, Rhode Island Worth Visiting?
Providence is the capital city of the state of Rhode Island. This was where the esteemed Roger Williams first settled with his small band of outcasts. From here, the beginnings of the colony, and eventually the state, grew outward.
Home to Brown University, RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), and Johnson & Wales, Providence is a lively city for all to enjoy. There’s cultural art galleries and museums to explore as well as Trinity Rep and PPAC (Providence Performing Arts Center) for theater shows. Where To Stay In Providence
Providence is an active city with parks, shopping, and plenty of colonial architecture to admire. Stay right in the heart of the city for the easiest access to mostly everything.

How Many Days Do You Need In Rhode Island?
To make sure you cover the highlights of my home state, I would suggest 5-6 days to see it all. Working from top to bottom, explore the northern part of Rhode Island in one day.
Then move down to Providence for 1-2 days depending on how much you love dining out and shopping. Providence is also a fantastic place to see a show at PPAC (Providence Performing Arts Center) or Trinity Rep, or one of the other many theaters.
You can view the towns surrounding Narragansett Bay in a day visiting many of the beaches and parks.
Next move down toward Newport and spend a day experiencing the glamor of the Newport mansions and the city’s maritime history.
Finally, head toward South County for a day at the beach. You have plenty of beaches to choose from. If you have extra time, then I suggest a day trip out to New Shoreham, Block Island on the Block Island ferry.

The Ocean State of Rhode Island is definitely worth visiting this year. A mixture of New England charm with Yankee ingenuity and a seafaring background, Rhode Island has something for everyone.
