Where is Chepachet, Rhode Island?
Chepachet is actually a village in the town of Glocester in the northwest part of the state.
It is pronounced /Chuh – patch – it/. Chepachet means “where rivers meet” and was originally settled by Pequot and Nipmuc native Americans. In Rhode Island, names of towns, cities, and villages are either British (Glocester – originally Gloucester, Lincoln, or Coventry) or Native American (Chepachet, Woonsocket, or Pawtucket).
Early settlers kept the original name and Chepachet developed as a mill village during the Industrial Revolution. Rhode Island is known for having mill villages as part of other towns and cities. Chepachet is a section of the larger town of Glocester and is considered the main hub of the town.
How to Get to Chepachet
You can easily reach Chepachet several different ways. From the capital city of Providence, Rhode Island, or coming in from Putnam, Connecticut, you can take Route 44. This route travels east-west and crosses the state before heading into Massachusetts toward the east. Chopmist Hill Road, also known as Route 102, travels north-south and several other main roads connect to Route 102 along the way.

If you’re someone who loves old-fashioned country stores and poking through antiques, then Chepachet is a definite destination.
Country Stores
Think penny candy, candles, fudge, local jewelry, and plenty of creative gifts for yourself or others. I know you can even smell that wonderful aroma when you first walk into a country store. There’s just something special about the comforting homey style of everything packed inside of a good old-fashioned country store.
Brown & Hopkins Country Store
Although the store has changed ownership several times in its long history, this is the oldest continually operating store since 1809. It started as a residence and hat store in 1799 and began life as a country store in 1809. James Brown and William Hopkins became the owners in 1921 and the name has stayed for over a century.
The goods inside may have changed from its earlier days, but there is something for everyone here. From candy and fudge to jewelry and household decorations, there is just something special about walking around an old country store. If you can’t make it in person, then visit them online here.

Hen House
The Hen House is where “artisans, farmers and foodies” come together in one amazing location. Honey, jams and jellies, and a variety of foods all local to the area are available for purchase. There are also home decor items, creative jewelry, kitchen accessories, and so much more.

Antiques
Chepachet is an antique lovers dream! There are five antique shops located right in the village, most of them all within sight of each other. This is very helpful if walking longer distances is difficult for you.
I would be very careful if using a walker or a wheelchair in the antique shops. These historic buildings are nearly 200 years old and not made for accessibility. Also, with the amount of items inside each shop, it may be hard to maneuver a wheelchair or mobility scooter through the aisles.
Most of the antique stores offer a variety of glassware, pictures, wooden furniture, old toys, jewelry, and many other delights for you to discover. Tavern On Main
Tavern on Main is a local favorite for both its food and atmosphere. Built nearly 300 years ago, the tavern has undergone numerous changes through the years. Many claim this building is haunted and strange sightings and sounds keep that rumor alive.
There are supposedly several spirits haunting the place. These include Jedediah Sprague who was the owner during the Dorr Rebellion, and a woman who sits in a back booth. She had been called Elizabeth by staff and patrons but can be heard on a recording saying her name is Alice.
Whether you like haunted places or just eating good food, Tavern on Main has both for you. Their enticing menu options include seafood, veal, chicken, beef, and pasta, along with appetizers and salads.

Pinewood Pub & Pizza
This is where “friends and neighbors meet” for family friendly food. There’s something here for everyone. Start with appetizers and move onto soups and salads. Then choose from burgers and sandwiches, hearty entrees and plenty of pizza selections.

Combining traditional Italian pastries with much-loved pizza, DePetrillo’s is well-known in Rhode Island with 5 locations around the state. The shop is small and does not have seating. Come inside to pick up pastries, cookies, pizza, strombolis, calzones, rolls, and bread. And don’t forget the famous RI pizza strips!

Activities in and Around Chepachet
Mulberry Vineyards
Wine grower David Wright bought the historic Andrew Brown homestead in 2011 and began Mulberry Vineyards. They offer both red and white wines along with hard ciders, and seasonal sangria and beers. Celebrate your special day at the vineyard or attend their summer concert series for a relaxed evening of music and family fun.
Wine tastings are available Saturday and Sunday from 11:00am-4:00pm. Located at 95 Pound Road, Chepachet.
Pulaski State Park and Recreational Area
This day-use facility offers many seasonal activities to keep everyone happy. From trout fishing in the spring to picnics and swimming in the summer, this state park is a great place to spend the day. There are hiking trails to use year round and cross-country skiing in the winter if enough snow.
Reservations are required to book the Pavilion for the day. EV charging stations are available with a four hour time limit.

Sprague Farm Glocester Land Trust
The ancestors of Colonel Anthony Sprague (1774-1818) established a working farm in Glocester that is now a network of hiking trails around the property. These marked trails wander past well-made stone walls offering evidence of pastures for cattle or sheep.
The Sprague family’s land was transferred to the Glocester Land Trust in 1990. Old roads are used as the hiking trails and are marked and maintained for exploring. Horses are also permitted on the property. Enjoy some time out in nature.

The Ancients and Horribles Parade
Started in 1926, this annual parade held on Fourth of July takes place right on Route 44, otherwise known as Putnam Pike. It parodies the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company which is the oldest military organization in the United States.
The parade has a mix of traditional Fourth of July floats and marchers along with displays representing current political and current affairs in the country. Prizes are awarded to the Most Ancient and Horrible, the Most Patriotic, and the Best Walking Group. Get there early for a great spot to watch!

Walkabout Trail Head
Open year-round, the Walkabout Trails follow along the shoreline of Bowdish Reservoir. There are 3 loops to choose from, including a two-mile, a six-mile, and an eight-mile loop. Parking is available for $2.00.
“Walkabout” is an Australian Aboriginal term and the story goes that the trail was named by Australian sailors in 1965. They were supposedly waiting for their ship to be outfitted and spent their free time creating the paths in the area for hiking.

Scenic Drives Through the Countryside
The area around Chepachet is filled with backroads and plenty of rural charm. Drive the scenic twisting roads and experience small farms, forests, and local New England architecture. There are many local farms and orchards in the vicinity, so check before you go to see what may be open at the time of your visit. Apples and berries are available in season, as well as farm produce. You can find pumpkins and decorative autumn items in the Fall.

Grace Note Farm Inn
Called a Rhode Island Farmstead, the Grace Note Farm Inn offers accommodations with typical old-fashioned New England charm. The private suite includes one double bed, a second bedroom with a double bed and a child-sized bed, along with a parlor and one more single bed. Several individual rooms are also available at the inn.
The Great Room contains an open kitchen and a floor-to-ceiling fireplace to cozy up to on a cold day. Sit at the table, relax on the couch, or just gather together to share stories.
